Learning to say Merry Christmas in Chinese? How about “Asparagus Elf” or “Reindeer Hotdog”? And other silly English to Chinese translations of food and Christmas combos!

You don’t just learn to say Merry Christmas in Chinese – you learn so many other wacky combo words in Chinese too! We had a couple hundred kids join our special Dim Sum Warriors Bilingual Holiday Doodle Dates—where our artist Colin drew the wacky things kids suggested, while former professor Yen Yen and certified Chinese teachers helped to translate them into Chinese! From English to Chinese!

We had 2 sessions: 1 for kids in Southeast Asia, and 1 for kids in the US (which was co-hosted by China Institute in New York).

We started off by reading an excerpt from our crazy holiday-themed story MERRY EGGSMAS 生蛋快乐 Shēng dàn kuàilè (a play on how ‘Merry Christmas’ 圣诞快乐 Shèngdàn kuàilè can sound very close to ‘Happy Laying Eggs!’ 生蛋快乐 Shēng dàn kuàilè). Merry Christmas in Chinese? How about Merry Eggsmas in Chinese? Go read it on our award-winning app!

Then we mashed FOOD 食物 shíwù up with CHRISTMAS 圣诞节 Shèngdàn jié to get some crazy characters, and learned what to call them in Chinese!

Thanks to everyone who joined our special Holiday Doodle Dates! We had participants from Singapore, Malaysia and across the USA including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington State, North Carolina and more! Do join us for the next Doodle Date—it’ll be an extra-special one!
