The Dim Sum Warriors Bilingual Learning System is rooted in actual research into literacy development, pedagogy and learning, as well as deep experience in teaching and great respect for the work of teachers.
Yumcha Studios is led by Dr. Woo Yen Yen, the ”pedagogical engine” of Yumcha. She has worked as a schoolteacher, an instructional designer for an education technology firm, as well as many years as a tenured professor in the field of education, specializing in curriculum development. She knows the history of education and knows what actually works. She’s also got a global perspective of educational needs, having worked in the US, Taiwan, Mainland China, Singapore, and also Afghanistan.
We also understand content creation deeply. Chief of Content Colin Goh has won plaudits and awards for his creative work in multiple genres, which includes comics and cartoons, satirical and humorous fiction, plays, children’s storybooks and filmmaking. Besides being a qualified lawyer in three countries, he is also the cartoonist of two New York Times bestselling books.
Together, Yen Yen and Colin are also multiple international award-winning creatives. They have made feature films that have been screened all over the world and picked up major prizes in Europe, Asia and the USA, and are also the creators of the critically-acclaimed Dim Sum Warriors graphic novels (now published by Scholastic), which were adapted into a giant stage musical that has toured over 25 major cities in China.
Dear Parents & Educators,
We first created the Dim Sum Warriors, a sci-fi epic about a world of dumplings, when our daughter was born in New York—far away from our home country of Singapore. We wanted her to grow up knowing that East and West were of equal importance, and to make sure she never fears different languages and cultures.
We are very happy that even though she spent her first 8 years in New York, she has become joyously bilingual—reading, writing and creating in both English and Mandarin Chinese.
Yet, all over the world, we keep learning of kids who struggle with learning and using their second language—whether it’s Singaporean kids and Mandarin, or Vietnamese and Taiwanese kids and English. So many of us take classes for years, yet don’t read books or magazines in the 2nd language, can’t maintain a conversation, and can’t even tell a joke. Just memorizing and drilling doesn’t work.
That’s why we came up with the Dim Sum Warriors Bilingual Learning System—it distills the many lessons we have learned from our educational journey with our daughter—to help other young children develop the skills, cultural confidence and creativity they’ll need to thrive in the global economy.
The System is also built upon Yen Yen’s years of experience and expertise as a professor in the field of education and curriculum development, and our many years of making stories that leave an impact. We wanted to create a method of learning that’s not just effective but enjoyable too. We are very proud that Education Alliance Finland has validated our methods by certifying our system for pedagogical quality according to their rigorous, evidence-based standards.
