Q: I’m confused about how the Dim Sum Warriors Club works. There seem to be so many pieces to it.
The Club is a self-paced program—which means you decide how much you want to achieve according to the pace you set for yourself. No pressure, no artificially set deadlines!
The foundation of the Dim Sum Warriors Club is our hilarious bilingual comic stories … and we provide you with the resources you need to maximize learning through our comic stories.
Here’s how we suggest you use our resources:
Step 1: Once you’ve joined the Club, login to the Club on our website, and set your goals with our Training Plan. We strongly encourage planning in discussion with your kids, because kids learn better when they set their own goals.
Step 2: Read our stories—in book form or on our App. With the App, kids can hear actors reading the stories aloud. If you’re concerned about screen time, Club Members get discounts on our beautiful hardcover editions—perfect for bedtime stories!
Step 3: Practice reading aloud and play games with our App. With the app, kids can record themselves reading the stories aloud and get feedback on word recognition, pronunciation and fluency through our reading evaulation function. They can also play vocabulary building games.
Step 4: Login to the Club on our website and use the activities and resources. Club members get exclusive access to a host of resources—online quizzes, printable activity sheets, word lists, prompts for discussion, writing sheets, paper puppets, and even features on education trends on our blog.
Step 5: Join our Bilingual Comic Jam! Our livestream learn-and-drawalong sessions are great for getting inspiration, understanding the stories in different ways, learning new vocabulary, and picking up creative tips. They’re always informal and fun—no judgments!
Keep going! Members get continually updated content on the App and website!

Q: What age group is the Dim Sum Warriors Club for?
The Dim Sum Warriors Club is recommended for kids between kindergarten to 5th grade/Primary 5 who are already learning Chinese as a foreign or second language—whether in school or through a tutor or tuition centre.
We don’t recommend the Club for teens because the stories and characters might seem too cutesy for them—but if they’re cool with that, hey, why not?
We also do NOT recommend the Club for kids under 5—mainly because it requires the use of our App and we discourage really young kids from spending too much time on screens. For pre-school kids, please pick up our bilingual print books instead. They’re specially written to be read aloud expressively, and kids really love them! Perfect for a giggle around bedtime!
Q: Is the Dim Sum Warriors Club suitable for absolute beginners?
Sadly, we would have to say no. The kids who have benefitted most significantly from the Dim Sum Warriors Club program tend to have at least one to two years’ prior exposure to learning Chinese—whether in school or through a tutor or tuition centre.
We won’t be teaching how to read or write Chinese words from scratch, for example. The Club is meant to complement whatever Chinese they’re already learning and build on them—by providing content and strategies that are more inspiring and motivating than traditional textbooks or formal classes.
Q: Does the Club use Traditional or Simplified Chinese?
We are committed to including both Simplified 简体 and Traditional 繁體 characters as far it is feasible.
Simplified characters (used in mainland China as well as places like Singapore and Malaysia) are easier to read and write, but we have found it useful to contrast it with the more complicated Traditional characters (used mostly in Taiwan and Hong Kong), as they illustrate—quite literally—the meanings of the words themselves more clearly, which helps retention. So we try to use both where it makes sense.
We do so in our livestream Bilingual Comic Jam and Doodle Date sessions, as well as the mini-posters that we create for review afterwards.
In our App, users can toggle between Simplified and Traditional characters for reading the stories. However, the App’s Reading Evaluation Function uses only Simplified characters at the moment. We will be adding Traditional characters in due course.
Our print books use only the Simplified script, as they were first published in Singapore and Malaysia. Books purchased through our online store are the Singapore editions with the Simplified script. We will be selling editions with Traditional script in Taiwan and Hong Kong, as soon as we finalize distribution in those territories.
The writing sheets in our lesson plans cover Simplified characters, but will be including a set with Traditional characters as soon as we can.
Q: Does the Dim Sum Warriors Learning System follow a set curriculum such as the national Chinese language curriculum in Singapore or the CEFR levels?
We are a global company with learners located in different parts of the world, and DO NOT follow a specific national curriculum.
HOWEVER, our program and pedagogy are closely aligned with the OECD’s 21st Century Skills and Competencies and PISA’s new standards for Global Competence, so we place a big emphasis on creativity and also cross-cultural thinking.
Our founders are award-winning creatives, so above all else, the Dim Sum Warriors program is designed to engage kids’ INTERESTS and to let them experience how to use language to CREATE and PLAY. That is why the program is based not on textbooks, but a series of hilarious comic book stories (which educational research has proven are exceptionally effective for language learning). Our lessons and activities extend from these comic books. You can find our print books in most bookstores in Singapore or on the Dim Sum Warriors web store.
Meanwhile, our livestream learn-and-drawalong Jam and Doodle Date sessions are 70% pre-planned and 30% generated ‘live’ by participants. This is because we work within the “culturally relevant curriculum framework”, and know that motivation and recall is increased greatly when learners themselves participate in generating the curriculum.
Q: Is the program interactive?
LIVESTREAM SESSIONS: Our livestream Doodle Date and Bilingual Comic Jam sessions are hosted through Members-Only Facebook groups with an Artist, an English Teacher and a Chinese Teacher as hosts. The hosts can “see” the audience through the COMMENTS section while the audience can see the hosts through the LIVESTREAM. The audience participates by drawing along and typing in questions and suggestions that the teachers and artists pick up as ideas for drawing and learning. Our members also get invited to read stories aloud along with the hosts/teachers. This is extra interactive as they are engaging directly with the teachers. What’s really interesting and innovative about our livestream sessions is the very high level of engagement that kids enjoy. Many members have told us how the sessions have really inspired their kids to carry on drawing and playing with the words they have learned. We understand how many families and kids are completely “Zoomed out” because of home-based learning during the pandemic. Our Jam sessions are a refreshingly different online experience! You can have a taster with our FREE online DOODLE DATE.
APP: Our App is highly interactive. Kids can record themselves reading the stories; play games to test themselves on the vocabulary they’ve learned from the stories; and get evaluation on fluency and pronunciation from our Reading Evaluation function. Experience it for yourself by looking for “Dim Sum Warriors” in the App Store or Google Play. The App comes with one story free. Club Members unlock more stories and resources.
Q: Why do you need both an English teacher and a Chinese teacher present at the online sessions?
Our Jam and Doodle Date sessions allow kids to be able to hear and see how Chinese is used commonly, but we don’t want to overwhelm them with a lot of formal Chinese. For kids learning it as a second or foreign language, being bombarded so early is likely to turn them off.
So in our livestream sessions, we have an artist who leads in the drawing AND an English AND Chinese teacher who are casually chatting with each other in both English and Mandarin. The stories we read, the vocabulary and cultural knowledge from the conversations, the audience questions and suggestions, all inform the curriculum.
We keep up a breezy bilingual English-Chinese banter because:
we want English-dominant parents to be able to participate in the children’s learning as well;
it reflects real life usage better; and
this is based on research about an innovative pedagogy called TRANSLANGUAGING–where kids use their dominant or ‘home’ language as an anchor in acquiring the new language. This allows kids to play and experiment with the language more, creating connections that bolster confidence, and leads to more advanced usage.
What kids end up getting is “metalinguistic awareness” and “metacultural awareness” – so their brains will be comparing and contrasting continually between languages and cultures. This helps kids remember better and “own” the learning quicker rather than having the new knowledge always be external to them, and often forgetting everything soon after the exam.
In other words, our program gets kids to experience language not as a subject to be memorized for a test, but as something that is alive, a bridge for communication across cultures, and full of creative potential.
Q: What time is the JAM?
Saturdays 9.30am (UTC+8) – that’s Singapore and Malaysia time. It would be Friday night for Eastern and Pacific Time.
Q: What’s the difference between the Doodle Date (DD) and the full JAM sessions?
1. Both are STREAMED AND RECORDED: Once you join the CLUB, you will have access to over 20 DD and Jam sessions with quizzes and mini-posters. Like the DD sessions, the JAM sessions are also streamed.
2. Planning and structure: The JAM sessions have more planning and structure compared to the DDs. They are typically aligned with the books in the APP so kids get support in their understanding of the books. The lessons usually start with read-alouds, then a focus on a particular aspect of the book – eg. journey of the characters, vocabulary, relevant 成语,and it ends with a creative draw-along aligned with the theme of the session.
3. Interactivity: The JAMs have greater Q and A, back and forth. Often, our members, when they have practiced their bilingual read aloud through the APP and feel confident enough, they come on the show as guest hosts/ readers. Those sessions become extra interactive for the hosting kids and all our kids feel more motivated to practice reading aloud so they can be hosts as well. The creative draw-along is interactive like in the DDs but at a slower pace.
4. Creative projects: Every now and then, we make Creative Projects together in the JAM sessions to support kids in their creative journeys. This past week, we made a 4-panel comic in Chinese and in February, for Chinese new year, we will be designing our own Hong Baos with food puns and cartoons. The goal of this is to make sure that kids are making and creating with what they have learned. The message is always that “you can already create with what you have –you don’t have to wait till your Chinese is better.” We know that kids get more engaged when they can “do” something with the language.
Q:What if I miss a session of the JAM or cannot make the timing of the JAM?
We record all JAM sessions and you can access them easily in the Members-Only area on the web site. With each recording, we attach a mini-poster and a quiz. So you can watch each lesson and then review immediately using the poster and quiz.
Q: What if I’m in a different time zone but I’m still interested in the CLUB?
All JAM sessions are recorded, and you can access them in your own time in the Members-Only area on the web site. We do highly recommend that your family decides on a set time every week to do this eg. Sat morning, so that the kids get used to having a routine, taking out their markers and paper and showing you or posting their drawings with bilingual text afterwards. With each recording, we attach a mini-poster and a quiz. So you can watch each lesson and then review immediately using the poster and quiz.
Our members who have used the recorded videos tell us they are very engaged, have a lot of fun, and learn a lot as well. So it’s not a problem being in a different time zone. The only thing missing is that if you view the recorded videos you can’t suggest ideas immediately for the LIVE draw-along.
Q: You mentioned that you provide lesson plans. What do they cover?
Lesson plans for families vary from book to book, but most will have Everyday Practice Suggestions, Book Discussion Ideas, Key Word lists, Draw-a-Word Exercises, Connect Word to Picture exercises, and lists of Sight Words and Key Words. We will be increasing the number of packets each month.
Q: What kind of creative projects are in the lesson plan packets?
These are small projects inspired by individual stories that families can work together on, such as drawing a comic of your own bedtime routine (based on “Papa I’m Still Not Sleepy”); or designing a toy using a kitchen tool (based on “My Way is the Best”, where our heroes use a whisk as a pogo stick) and name it in both Chinese and English. We will be introducing more creative projects—some bigger and some more modest—in the coming weeks.
Q: Is the program in Cantonese or Mandarin?
The program is bilingual Mandarin+English.
