Halloween is a time for ghosts, ghouls, and goblins, and at Dim Sum Warriors, it’s the perfect occasion for getting creative and learning some Mandarin!
If you missed the annual Halloween Doodle Date, here’s the recap where we learned about ghosts and creatures in Chinese mythology and drew imaginative ideas Halloween creatures and foods with two amazing cartoonists, Colin Goh and Josef Lee!
Highlights from the Halloween Bilingual Event
During our Halloween Bilingual Event, participants explored the fascinating world of Chinese mythology and folklore. We learned about various ghosts and mythical creatures, enriching our understanding of Chinese culture while having a blast drawing.
The only place in the world where you learn to draw and say:
- Popcorn Mummy 爆米花木乃伊 |bào mǐ huā mù nǎi yī
Drawing a mummy made out of popcorn was a hit!
Kids enjoyed the quirky combination and practiced their Mandarin pronunciation.
- Cheese Pumpkin Jack-O’- Lantern | 起司南瓜灯 |qǐ sī nán guā dēng
This cheesy twist on the classic Jack-O’-Lantern had everyone laughing and learning new vocabulary related to Halloween and food.
- French Fry Skeleton | 薯条骷髅 |shǔ tiáo kū lóu
A skeleton made of French fries was both funny and educational, helping kids remember the words for skeleton and French fries in Mandarin.
Halloween Bilingual Event Activities
The Halloween Bilingual Event was packed with interactive activities designed to engage kids and make learning Mandarin enjoyable. Our cartoonists, Colin Goh and Josef Lee, guided participants through the drawing process, encouraging creativity and language practice.
Activity Highlights:
- Drawing Challenges: Participants were given fun and hilarious drawing challenges which you will never see in other places, such as creating their own mythical creatures or Halloween-themed foods or mix them up together!
This activity helped reinforce the new vocabulary they learned during the event and make learning process like funny and stressless games!
- Storytelling Sessions: We shared spooky stories from Chinese mythology, allowing kids to immerse themselves in the language and culture. These stories included tales of the 鬼 (guǐ) or ghost, and other supernatural beings.
- Interactive Q&A: Kids had the opportunity to ask questions and interact with the cartoonists, making the learning experience dynamic and personalized.
